Start with honesty, trust and relationships. Add community, creativity and vision, and those are the things that Triumph Development values the most. “When we get a deal, it’s because we’re passionate about it. But as passionate as we are about our business, we’re not interested in succeeding at the expense of things we value, like relationships, honesty and trust.” “Steve and I were lucky to have been associated with some excellent role models early in our careers. I guess you could say that we both – actually that all of us at Triumph – came to the table with some pretty strong values we got from our families. But I guess we learned early on that how you do business is as important as the business you do.” “When we look at a deal, we don’t always look at it the way others do. We’ve been able to make great things happen in deals where others couldn’t see the value in making the effort. I think there is a place in this business for creativity and innovation. An important place.” “We like to think that Steve and I are focused on finding the best answer, the best solution, the best approach. Anybody can give an answer, but we’re looking for the best answer. Sometimes you have to be a little flexible and creative to get there, but it’s worth the effort, we think.” “Our volume of deals would increase if we were willing to sacrifice the other parts of our lives, but we’re not. I have a family and Steve has a family and we all have lives outside the office. We want to be able to do things like coach youth sports and participate in our kids’ lives. Don’t misunderstand, there is nobody more focused on the business and the job than Steve and myself, and we do whatever it takes to get the job done. But we also know that we need to balance our work lives with our personal lives.” “When we talk about a win-win situation, we’re not always just talking about us and our clients. We think it is just as important that the end users and the community come out feeling pleased with the way things were done and the end result. If we’re developing a condominium project, it’s important to us that our partners and the buyers and the community feel good about it. So call it win/win/win/win.” “Just like your relationships in life, every relationship in business has to have give-and-take, or it’s not going to work. We don’t try to steamroll our clients or partners with our own ideas. We’d rather work with people to come up with the best possible solution that everybody can be happy with. It’s more important for the deal to work out for everybody than it is for any single party to “win”. Of course we keep our eye on what’s good for the deal, but we’re pretty easy to work with.” “James and I like to think that we’re pretty young guys, but we’ve been in this business a fairly long time. And we’ve never lost sight of the fact that there is as much value in the way you do business as there is in what you do. Maybe it takes a bit more effort to really work the relationships, to keep an open mind and look for the best, most innovative answer. And maybe it takes a bit more effort to make sure we have time for our families and our communities, but we think it’s an extra effort worth putting out.” |
